Short Bio

Jeong-Yeol Yo on received his first Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering from Yonsei University, Seoul (South Korea), where he worked primarily on polymer colloids. He received his second Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), working on lab-on-a-chip and biomaterials. He has recently been elected as President of Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE), and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for Journal of Biological Engineering (published by IBE and BioMed Central), Associate Editor for ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers) Journals, and Editorial Board Member for Resource Magazine (published by ASABE).

Yoon's research group is currently working on three different projects. 1) Food safety and environmental monitoring: low-cost smartphone detection of foodborne and waterborne pathogens from microfluidic devices. 2) Biomaterials and tissue engineering: use of RGD-nanoparticle-trapped nanostructured surfaces for enhanced endothelialization on vascular grafts or organ-on-a-chip applications. 3) Fast PCR diagnostics: extremely fast (<5-min thermocycling), portable, and all-on-one PCR device for on-site pathogen identification.
